All in all, this feels like a devil's advocate review; you're not reviewing the album so much as the amazing amount of positive spin surrounding it (which by all means should be addressed).

No it's nothing new or revolutionary, no it doesn't have any sort of range, and whether there is any sort of remarkable aftertaste is still yet to be determined for me... but it's not unenjoyable, and it's actually pretty fun.

My only gripe is that when the lo-fi label that has been applied to the likes of the Velvet Underground, The Verlaines, Beulah, Beat Happening, the Jesus and Mary Chain, etc gets attached to TNV, it comes off as more of a novelty than anything else. Don't be fooled for a moment that this record isn't completely contrived; there's no reason this record has to sound like this and couldn't have tried anything different. Lo-fi is extremely versatile and TNV chose to limit versatility in choice of an aesthetic (much like Jad Fair and Half Japanese, but at least Jad Fair is a character).

The question becomes, 'is it enjoyable despite being contrived or unacceptable?' ...which is hilariously personal.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4835997791588703267.post-48243621242853882622008-12-31T05:27:00.000-08:002008-12-31T05:27:00.000-08:00Maybe TNV is just having fun. Incredibly well written, with rather interesting lyrics if you actually read them. Great band, and great album. Your review is the kind of shit that makes me wish blogs didn't exist, or at least bloggers that think they are so well informed on shit they have to overanalyze something as simple as a noise pop album. All that matters to most rock and roll fans is the rock and roll. Pretension is not the problem with Times New Viking, it is the problem with you.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
